Branch Chhatra League leader Enamul Haque Enam has sat on a hunger strike to protest the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by erasing the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Jahangirnagar University (JABI) and demanding three demands including punishment of those involved.
The hunger strike leader is Enamul Haque Enam, a student of 43 batch of the University's Department of Public Health and Informatics and vice-president of the Chhatra League.
On Thursday (February 15) at one in the afternoon, he started a hunger strike at the altar of the university's Shaheed Minar.
The three-point demand raised by the hunger striker Chhatra League leader is that the detractors of Bangabandhu and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should be immediately expelled from the university, the maximum punishment of those involved in the university and national law should be ensured, even after 8 days, the indifference of those involved should be investigated.
Alleging that the BCL is neglected in the responsibilities, Enam said that while Bangabandhu is the undisputed leader of the 18 crore Bengali liberation struggle, his portrait was erased, is the Chhatra League so weak or not? It is their organizational responsibility, it is a farce, drama is being played here, but we have repeatedly given an ultimatum to the president—the editor, but they have not taken any action.
It is known that a portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was painted on the walls of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Building, but after the incident of rape of an outsider woman in the university on February 3, the leaders and activists of a section of the student union removed the portrait of Bangabandhu and drawing a graffiti. This part is led by Amartya Roy and Riddha Anindya Ganguly of the 47th batch archeology department.
Acknowledging the graffiti drawing, the leaders of the student union said, ‘New graffiti has been drawn to support the ongoing anti-rape movement in the university and to warn the oppressors. With almost three years passed The previous picture was blurred, and a huge, clear and aesthetic painting of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was visible on the side wall. This graffiti has been drawn based on the relevance of the ongoing anti-rape movement.’
The university administration has formed a four-member investigation committee in this incident, and the four-member committee, Professor Khandkar of the International Relations Department, has been chaired by Professor Khandkar of the Department of Bengali. Shamim Ahmed and Associate Professor of Fine Arts MM Moyezuddin, also the committee member-secretary ABM Azizur Rahman, Deputy Registrar (Administration-2), ABM Azizur Rahman, has been asked to submit a report with recommendations within seven working days.
When asked about this, Branch Chhatra League President Aktaruzzaman Sohel said, we have also made the same demand to the administration. We have also demanded the expulsion of the accused from the university and trial under the state law, the administration has assured us that they will take action. We will go to the next program after seeing the administration.
