According to an order of Taliban leader Hibatullah Akkhundzada, ‘cannabis cultivation is prohibited in all regions of Afghanistan. Violation of this ban will destroy the cultivated drugs. Those who violate the rules will be punished according to Sharia rules.’
Opium and cannabis are among the most commonly produced drugs in Afghanistan, and before the Taliban rule, the drug was widely cultivated. According to the 2010 United Nations statistics, ‘As a pro-Western government in Afghanistan has power, farmers in the country have been growing cannabis on a large scale. It was one of the country's most produced crops. In 2010, the country became the top supplier of the drug.’
