BNP acting chairman Tarek Rahman was sentenced to 9 years rigorous imprisonment and his wife Dr. Zobaida Rahman was sentenced to three years in prison by the court in 2007. A case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in 2007. The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Datra Judge Md Asaduzzaman gave this verdict on Wednesday (August 2).
Besides, the court sentenced Tariq Rahman to a fine of Tk 3 crore, imprisonment for three months without labor and a fine of Tk 35 lakh for Zobaida Rahman, and one month's imprisonment without labor.
2 crore 74 lakh 93 thousand 87 taka of Tarek has been declared bad in favor of the state.
The judge started the rat-past at 3:22 am on Wednesday and he announced the sentence at 4:00 pm.
On September 26, 2007, Kafrul Thana of the capital, Tarek Rahman, acting chairman of BNP, his wife Dr. The case against Zobaida Rahman and Zobaida's mother Iqbal Mand Banu filed the case against them by Deputy Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Zahirul Huda.
In 2008, ACC Deputy Director Taufiqul Islam filed a charge sheet against three people. After that, Zebaida filed a ruling in the High Court to cancel the case. In the same year, the High Court issued a ruling on the suspension of the case. The Appellate Division upheld the order of the High Court. After the final hearing, on April 12, 2017, the High Court dismissed the case (discharged) and dismissed the case.
Zobaida filed a leave-to-appeal against the High Court's dismissal order that year, and a four-member appellate bench led by Chief Justice Hasan Fatz Siddiqui dismissed the leave-to-appeal and upheld the High Court's deota rasht.
On November 1, 2022, during the charge sheet, the court issued arrest warrant against Tariq Rahman and Zobaida Rahman. Later, they were shown as fugitives. On April 13, 2023, the court ordered the trial of 26(2) and 27(1) sections of the ACC Act against them.
If the trial process is ongoing, if Iqbal Mand Banu dies, he will be exempted from this case.
On July 27, after presenting the arguments of the state side, Dhaka Metropolitan Datra Judge Md fixed Wednesday (August 2) for the announcement of the Tarek-Zobaidar case. Asaduzzaman, in this case, 42 of the 56 witnesses testified in the court.
After 16 years of the case, the court announced the verdict today.
