Alhaj Maulana Abdus Chalam, the nominated candidate of Awami League, has been elected mayor by getting 6 thousand 292 votes in the boat symbol out of 10 thousand 191 votes in the mayoral post of Durgapur municipality in the upazila's bordering upazila of Netrakona.
District Election Officer and Returning Officer Abdul Latif Sheikh announced the election results after counting the votes in the Upazila Parishad hall on Thursday (January 12) night.
BNP leader Subhendu Sarkar Pintu got 2 thousand 757 votes, the closest rival of the boat, the independent candidate of the coconut tree symbol, the independent candidate of the coconut tree symbol.
Also, Bangladesh Islami Andolan Maulana Abdul Mannan Sohag (handpakha) got only 1 thousand 142 votes.
10 thousand 191 people voted out of a total of 20 thousand 781 voters in the polls that started from morning till afternoon.
Out of the total 9 wards of the city, Ward No. 1 Susong Adarsh Vidyaniketan has the highest number of votes in the center, 1023 people voted against 2,76 votes in the center.
The lowest voted 8 was in the 8th Ward Khujiura Government Primary School Center, with 995 votes against 2,116 votes.
On October 18, 2022, Mayor Bidar Ala Uddin Alal died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital Dhaka and the post became vacant.
